Brave New Voices youth poetry/spoken word events coming up

Brave New Voices youth poetry/spoken word events

The Brave New Voices (BNV) festival, the annual championship poetry slam event
of Youth Speaks, happens this month here in San Francisco and offers numerous
workshops and opportunities to watch the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals of
this dynamic celebration of eloquent young talent.

One part of the event that offers free access on a weekday in San Francisco --
making it ideal for summer youth programs serving teens – is the quarterfinals:
Friday, July 22, 10 a.m.-noon and 2-4 p.m., going on simultanously at several
Mission District locations. Admission to all of them is free – just come to any
of these locations during those times:

Theatre of Yugen
2840 Mariposa between Florida & Alabama

Red Poppy Art House
2693 Folsom St. @ 23rd St.

Dance Mission Theatre
3316 24th St. @ Mission

The Marsh's Mock Café
1062 Valencia St. between 21st & 22nd

ODC School
351 Shotwell between 17th & 18th

Many more events connected with BNV are happening. Some are on the weekend, in
the East Bay and/or require tickets. Please share with any interested young
people in your program. (These events are for more mature audiences; not for
younger children.)

The BNV semifinals happen on Saturday, July 23, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. with free
admission. The semifinals take place in four locations simultaneously.
San Francisco: Yerba Buena Theater in Yerba Buena Gardens, 701 Mission @ Third
Contemporary Jewish Museum, 736 Mission between Third & Fourth
(also in Oakland at the Oakland Museum and Kaiser Convention Center)

The BNV schedule also lists BNV Town Hall Meetings: National Youth Town Hall
that same day, Saturday, June 23, 2-4 p.m. I haven't been able to confirm if
admission is free, but it seems likely.
San Francisco location: Yerba Buena Theater (see above).
(Also happening at the Oakland Museum.)
Description: The National Youth Town Hall challenges the BNV community to look
deeper into the issues of 21st century America. What are the political
challenges of our time? And as young artists coming from across the globe, how
can we respond in new, powerful ways? Join the conversation, taking place
simultaneously on both sides of the Bay.

The Brave New Voices Grand Slam finals happen the evening, Saturday, June 23,
7-10 p.m. at War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco, 301 Van Ness @ Grove.
Tickets are $18 and up.
