Yerba Buena Gardens: Free summer weekday performances

Yerba Buena Gardens is a great space for kids -- expansive lawns, an interesting waterfall and sculptures, a great playground, transit-accessible (though depending on the route, there's a 2-block walk through busy downtown streets from some lines, including Muni Metro).

And during summer, this San Francisco treasure features free outdoor performances on many summer weekdays, at or near noontime. Last year, YBG offered Friday performances in the Children's Garden, aimed at kids 10 and under; and Thursday lunchtime concerts for all ages, emphasizing world music and other styles.

This year's schedule isn't confirmed yet, but YBG says it will be ready in February and will be similar to last year's -- plus the plan is to add Tuesday poetry and spoken word performances, both by adults and youths.

The Summer Learning Network will post and distribute information as soon as it's available.

By the way, for programs doing community mapping and exploration, Yerba Buena Gardens was part of a government redevelopment project that also included the Moscone Convention Center,  created in a deteriorating area where there had once been industry South of Market.

Here's a brief history.
