Mission Science Workshop

Located at Mission High School, 3750 18th St. (Church Street side), Mission District/Castro

Fee-based: Can arrange one-shot or longer-term session at the Mission Science site, for second grade and up. “Combines traditional activities in experimental sciences – use of microscopes, balances, thermometers, culturing plants and animals – with building a variety of projects with clay, wood, and plastic, including pendulums, electric and mechanical toys, musical instruments, and apparatuses that enhance our explorations of sound, light and color. In all our activities … the emphasis is upon learning from observation and direct experience with real things.”


MOUSE Squad

Fee-based: MOUSE Squad works with young people ages 9-18 to build technology and leadership skills. Programs must have computers and Internet access on site, and a program leader or staffer who can be trained to work with the students (teaching credential not required). The program needs to be at least a week, which can be half-days, and can extend up to 12 weeks.

The Outdoor Exploratorium features a collection of 20 outdoor interactive science exhibits and artworks. Dotted along the waterfront at Fort Mason Center and in the adjoining 55-acre National Park of Upper Ft. Mason, these exhibits harness the wind, the waves, marine life, and the man-made and natural environments in this urban waterfront site. Maps are available at Fort Mason Center, Bldg A, open seven days a week.

San Francisco Botanical Garden

Free to youth programs: Tours and programs in an urban oasis.
San Francisco State University Kayaking/Sailing Camp

Lake Merced, Lakeshore/Sunset District

Full scholarships for groups representing low-income urban youth: Weeklong day camps on Lake Merced offer kayaking, sailing, science and environmental activities. Ages 8-15; ability to swim strongly preferred but not mandatory. Groups must commit to the full week of camp. Program run by the SFSU Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism.

San Francisco Zoo

Free to programs funded by SFUSD or DCYF: Arrange tours at least two weeks in advance. 1-5 ratio of adults to children/youth required. Additional adults pay admission fee. Grades 1-12.
University of California San Francisco Outdoor Programs Kayak Adventure

Free under scholarship program: Take your group on an urban aquatic adventure! UCSF Outdoor Programs has 440 full-scholarship spots for sea kayaking outings on Mission Creek for young people over 8 years old. Make arrangements directly with the program. Ability to swim strongly preferred but not mandatory.
