Unified District High School Poetry Slam kicks off this week

The Unified District Poetry Slam, dubbed UDPS, is a tournament-style performance opportunity where students represent their high schools, perform and spark dialogue with other writers from their school district and the entire Bay Area. The event is a TEAM SLAM, with each participating school having a team of 4-5 poets. This year we're anticipating over 80 poets from 25 schools! That's nearly 100 unique voices from the SF Bay Area. Youth Speaks Launches a New Pilot Program

for Middle School Students

Through a grant from the San Francisco Department of Children Youth & Family (DCYF), Youth Speaks is launching a pilot program for Middle School age students in San Francisco. Although our focus has been High School aged students for years, we have had great partnerships with Bay Area Middle Schools. The Middle School Program is an opportunity to engage a new, younger generation of writers.
We've innovated a new version of our hallmark arts education and youth development pedagogy and implemented it at 6 partner sites throughout San Francisco. Sites include the Filipino Education Center, Everett Middle School, Horace Mann Middle School, Samoan Community Development Center, Rapha House and Denman Middle School.
These residencies, which are designed both to enhance the academic day and to push artistic creativity, run 1-4 hours, once a week for eight weeks. We're excited to witness a new, younger generation of writers create, workshop, and perform at the first-ever Middle School Performance Showcase
We're excited to see the potential of this program grow.
